Tour Details

Spectacular and distant, lonely and forgotten, Choquequirao at 3085 m.a.s.l. (10,121.4 feet) is built on top of an almost unexplored mountain in the province of La Convencion, department of Cusco.

This data explains why, over the course of half a century, it became the last point of resistance of the Children of the Sun who sought refuge under these stone walls when Manco Inka “the rebellious Inka” was defeated.

Choquequirao, in Quechua language means “Cradle of Gold” or “Inclined Mountain of Gold”, due to the presence of pyrite stone, throughout the route and in the buildings themselves.

Choquequirao is currently compared to Machupicchu, although we consider that both are especially spectacular and it is very lucky to have both world wonders so close to Cusco.

Itinerary

Day 1CUSCO / CACHORA / CHIQUISCA

Very early (5:00 a.m.) we will pick you up from your accommodation in a private van or bus and begin our journey on the road that connects Cusco with Apurímac, enjoying beautiful landscapes. We arrive in Cachora at approximately 10 a.m.; We readied the last details while the muleteers loaded the necessary equipment for this trek. We leave the small town of Cachora and go into the middle of some beautiful landscapes.

Recommended between December and April, that everything is colorful.

From Cachora we walk for about three hours until we reach the point called Capuliyoc, from where we begin to descend through the impressive Canyon of the Apurímac River, observing large mountains and snow-capped mountains, and with luck the flight of the condor. From Capuliyoc we descend for about two hours until we reach our first camp in the Chiquisca area.

We will taste the delicious dinner that will recharge us.

Day 2CHIQUISCA / MARAMPATA / CHOQUEQUIRAO

Between 4 and 4:30 in the morning we will be awakened with a delicious tea or coffee in the tent. We will have a delicious and energizing breakfast, and before 6 in the morning we will continue descending through the canyon until we reach a point where we see the mountain that is crossing the river, and an amazing view of the path that we will have to climb all this day. Wonderful. Then after almost 2 hours we reached Rosalinas beach, where the bridge over the impressive Apurímac River is.

At about 8 in the morning we crossed the bridge and began to ascend. The walk is arduous but rewarding, we will stop a few times to rest while observing the landscape and we will arrive at the point of Santa Rosa (before 10:00 a.m.) where we can refresh ourselves.

We continue the climb until we reach the highest point at around 12:30 p.m. to the point called Marampata where we will have a box lunch and a short break until 14:00 p.m., from there we will continue with the last effort before arriving at the camp in Choquequirao at about 15:30 p.m. We rest for a while and from there we go down to the first archaeological complex, a set of terraces with an incredible view, with a house of worship to water, overlooking a waterfall that feeds the Apurímac River as it descends the mountain.

We return to camp around 6:00 p.m. and after enjoying the scenery, we enjoyed dinner.
