Huch’uy Qosqo (Quechua: “Little Cuzco” also called Yuchuy Cuzco) is an archaeological site 50 km north of Cusco, in Peru. It is located at an altitude of 3,600 meters, above the town of Lamay, in the Calca district, Calca province, in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
The site received its name in the 20th century; previously it had been known as Kakya Qawani. Pedro Cieza de León, in his Second Chronicle of Peru, stated that the palaces were built by Viracocha, the eighth Inca ruler.
Among a large number of buildings, some stone, some adobe, is a 40m-long kallanka (great hall). The water supply is an Inca-built irrigation canal, filled with stones of about 800 meters.1
Huchuy Qosqo was probably established as a royal hacienda by the Inca Emperor Viracocha around 1420 e. c.
The settlement in the archaeological ruin in Huchuy Qusqo dates back to between 1000 and 1400 e. c. In the early 1400s, according to the Spanish chronicler Pedro Cieza de León, it became a real property of the semi-mythical Viracocha (c. 1410-1438), the eighth Inca ruler.
To build, operate, and maintain their heritage, Viracocha and its descendants required large numbers of workers. The citizens of the Inca empire were obliged, under the mit’a system, to contribute labor to the Empire, instead of paying taxes on their wealth or production.
Undoubtedly, both “ears” or “horns” were a cause of sacralization among their builders. The best preserved in its stone walls, stairs, terraces and rooms.
We start from the city of Cusco (6:00 am) in our private transport to the north of the valley, to go through the Poroy road until we reach the town of Huila where we will start our walk through the Piuray lagoon until we reach a panoramic view of the lagoon called Occotuan.
We will also observe some birds of the lagoon such as the Huallata, Llequecho and some native plants of the place such as the Kishuar, Tankar, etc.
Then we will go up to the town of Umaspampa, where we will appreciate a beautiful Colonial Church, we will continue ascending until we reach the town called Ichupampa where we will get to know the typical houses of the area; We will pass through some agricultural platforms reaching the highest point of our walk called Chullpas or Mojones that are at an altitude of 4350 meters above sea level. From where we will have a panoramic view of the Qoricocha lagoon.
We will descend until we reach the town of Pucamarca where we will visit some families to share some customs, and with them we will have lunch.
We will continue our walk to reach a double jamb gate called León Puncu, Inca construction, where we will pass through a beautiful canyon and we will be able to observe the Sacred Valley of the Incas (Calca, and Lamay).
Finally we will arrive at the archaeological zone of HUCHUY QOSQO (small Cusco) where we will appreciate three-story buildings in the imperial style where it shows rectangular rooms, a plaza and from where we will observe the Pitusiray and Sahuasiray mountains.
At 13:00 a.m. We start the hour and a half walk downhill to reach the town of Lamay where we will have lunch, and then return in our private transport to the city of Cusco.
